BACK ON THE SUSPECT LIST
Sassy and Lola made the five-minute walk up to the local church. It was a beautiful building, with the most wonderful stained-glass windows that sent sparkles of color across the grass. Tall trees shaded the cemetery and gave the place the allusion of an oasis of tranquility in a busy world. There was something peaceful about it and on other occasions, they had wandered around looking at the old gravestones and just soaking in the history. However, today she was here to work and she wanted to find the vicar. She had been to a few services and found the man very likable. There was no fire and brimstone in Father Jacksonâs preaching. On the contrary, he believed that God was a caring God that loved all of us.
Lola knew that his house was behind the church. After taking a quick look around, she couldnât see him so she headed around the back.
âCan I help you, child?â Father Jackson stood up from behind a hedge and almost frightened Lola out of her skin.
Her heart was pounding, sweat appeared on her forehead, and she clenched her fists to fight back the visions that wanted to flood her mind.
Sassy touched her leg with her nose and sent feelings of love and warmth. âSafe, funny man hiding.â
Lola swallowed. âGood morning, Father,â she managed in a croak, âIâm sorry to disturb you if you were busy in your garden. I just wondered if I could ask you a few questions?â
The father dusted down his hands and led her across the garden to a table under a beautiful yellow rose that draped across a pergola and scented the air with peach. âIâm sorry if I startled you,â he said. âCan I get you some tea?â
Lola was already having to fight back the giggles at the thought of the father hiding behind the hedge to jump out at her that her bulldog had put in her mind. Now, she felt as if the world and this village revolved around drinking tea. Though she was sure the feeling was slightly to do with the shock, the startle that her body had just been through, she had a terrible urge to giggle and had to bite it down.
âBless you Father, but Iâve had tea at Tony Munchâs not 10 minutes ago and I donât think Iâd better have anymore.â
âOf course, of course, Tony is a wonderful man and so helpful to me. Now, how can I help you?â
Before she could answer, Lola felt Sassy straining on her lead. In the corner of the garden, a squirrel had come down from a tree, dashed across the grass, and then up another tree. The Frenchie was desperate to chase it.
âLet me go, squirrel, need to stop it.â
Lola pushed the thought out of her mind and tried to concentrate on the conversation. âWell, itâs actually Tony I need to talk to you about. Iâm working for Sandra Johnson, to find out if her husband could have been murdered.
